Freedom Centre helps support young people, families and whole communities to be healthy, happy and informed about diverse sexuality, sex and gender. Their volunteers and staff are all people who are also young, LGBTIQ+ and are trained to be able to give support and information to their peers.
Gender and sexuality are important parts of our identity and sense of self. We might identify as male (including transgender men), female (including transgender women) or as non-binary, gender-fluid, agender, or whatever is our current gender experience. Sexual identity is also diverse and may include same-sex (homosexual), male-female (heterosexual) or bisexual (both genders) identities. Each of us will identify our own sexual identity and capacity for sexual feelings.
At times we might we might question our gender and sexuality. We may experience questions and comments about who we are, how we behave and what are appropriate and acceptable expressions of gender and sexuality. We might feel pressure to not live openly and authentically. And we might struggle to have safe, satisfying and meaninful friendships and intimate relationships.
Because gender, sexuality and sex are not always visible and can feel difficult to talk about, having a safe space to discuss our experiences of identity, gender, sexuality and sex is very important.
